Wield vs Yew Tree, Sunday 21st August
Weather - Warm and Sunny
Match summary – Wield declare and lose!!!!!!!!
Well so far after reading all the other match reports it seems that if you don't write about the match but just be the poet lauret or a film reviewer and mention the odd event that happenned but not forgetting the BEST tea ever that everything is going to be ok. Which stands me in good sted as I wasn't even over there for half the game and I was only drafted in 2 months after the event!
Writing this after David's epic was always going to be a losing battle, so much so that I almost believed David when he told me he scored a KP sort of fifty, except that he didn't actually play.
The Yew Tree game is always an exciting date in the calender if nothing else for us beer drinkers as we get the best beer in the world in Summer lightning, for example, as virtually blind Paul who three years ago drank way too much before the game and then thought he would be unpassable at first slip, and the very same day as the loo at the pub became someones second bedroom, not anymore obviously as he is a responsible Dad.
So on to the game played between the athletes of Wield and the minows of the Yew Tree, who at the start of the game were reeling from their crushing wet defeat of last year (thats if you couldn't work that out from the Lord of The Rings match report). Wield batted first and all this comes from folk law as I wasn't there but I do believe that Ed probably slashes his eight runs through third man before George, (on a welcome return to the game) probably took the middle stump out of the ground. Alex Don was to fall to the same heroic bowling caught by one of the Blackmans, and with all these wickets falling a cornerstone innings was approaching, while others continued to fall Master Will Perkins was lashing his sturdy bit of wood at anything loose and taking his dashing looks on to a fine 50. Not stopping there he was to carry his bat, ably assisted by the sly old dog of Mr Andrew Don, not to be out done by his children he found his youth and was scampering two's where ever he could. It was all under control because we had the ambulance waiting at the pub just in case!! The innings was wrapped up by a surprise declaration 10 minutes before tea, but that is not surprising as they are the BEST teas ever.
So 153-7, was it going to be enough only time would tell, at least this year the sun was shinning so we weren't going to be beaten by the weather.
So after the BEST tea ever the Yew Tree strode out to bat made up of as many Wield players as Yew Tree ones, sadly missing this year was the run machine, the Rock, so two newbies stode out to take the honour, Ben and Tom took it awfully seriously as I would hope that a possible banning from ther pub would bring if they failed, Tom did fall to the spectacular bowling of the shorter in stature Blackman. So the much anticipated battle of the Robsons took place and neither gave in and both gave their all, (by the way Tony is the also ran of the cricketing family now). Ben was scoring carefully and coaxing Jack who went on to score a solid 10, after his departure came the big guns in Mark, Adrian and James, yep you guessed it the game was almost won in the batting prowess of these three, zip, zero and bugger all.
So a bit of regrouping came in Mr Butler (now the responsible Dad), and he, with Ben, who batted brilliantly passing his 50 in fine stlye with some magestic stokes. The boys continued quietly towards the total until Dougie was given out LBW about a mile down the pitch and a mile outside leg stump, but that is all part of the fun eh Dougie!!! Ben scoring a majestic 101 carried the Yew Tree through to their second victory and we wait with baited breath for the next game and the BEST tea ever.
On a personal note I thought this was my best performance ever, NOT OUT, NO WIDES, and NO DROPPED CATCHES, I have found my niche in the game. Also I would like to thank every one who puts in so much to the club, it is an honour to be a part of it.
P.S. if you could come in and spend some money in the non - cricket months that would also be great.
Keep smiling.
